Overview of accessibility

Description of the facility

Karolinum is the historical seat of Charles University. Its central space is the Great Hall, where the gatherings of the academic community, matriculations and graduation ceremonies are held.

Entrance

The surface of the access pavement from the Celetná and Rytířská streets consists of flat mosaic paving. Behind the double-leaf campus gate (width 2x200 cm) there is a courtyard with flat large-format paving.

The double doors of the main entrance with 1 offset step (height: 12 cm, depth: 160 cm) open mechanically outwards. They open mechanically towards a spacious doorway leading into the entrance hall with a reception desk. There is another set of double doors that opens towards the doorway. The doors have the same dimensions as the entrance doors.

A secondary accessible entrance is available on the left side of the courtyard. There is a straight run ramp (slope: 13.5%, width: 400 cm, length: 136 cm) in front of the double doors, which open mechanically inwards. There is a bell in the left corner by the doors (at the height of 91 cm).

The entrance leads to a passage, the right side offering access to the cloakroom and the left side offering access to the ground floor gallery space.

Building interior

A staircase consisting of 32 steps leads from the ground floor gallery to the second floor. It is equipped with an inclined platform lift with sufficient maneuvering space on both the lower and upper landing.

Access to the Great Hall on the second floor is via a covered gallery (minimum width: 98 cm) from the staircase. There is a straight run ramp with no handrails connecting the upper staircase landing and the gallery. The gallery and the foyer of the Great Hall are separated by double doors.

Entrance to the Great Hall, level throughout, is possible through robust double doors. The double doors of the Small Hall, which shares a foyer with the Great Hall, are narrower (main wing width: 70 cm, adjacent wing width: 72 cm). There is a restroom in the foyer with an accessible stall.

Elevator

There is no elevator. The second floor is accessible via an inclined platform lift (see Building interior).

An accessible restroom with an inadequate layout is located on the second floor. It is part of a sanitation facility with a spacious common area accessible by a single-leaf door (width: 80 cm), which opens mechanically outwards. The accessible stall (door width: 77 cm; stall width: 144 cm, depth: 153 cm) is separated from the rest of the restroom and its door is locked. The key is available at the reception. The single door to the restroom is labeled and opens mechanically outwards. The layout of the stall, with the toilet anchored to the middle of the front wall opposite the door, does not allow for the toilet to be accessed from the side (side space width: 57 cm max.).

The toilet bowl is equipped with one fixed and one folding handle.

Parking

The nearest accessible parking space is located on the corner of the Rytířská and Havířská streets.

Public transport

The nearby metro station Můstek (lines A and B), seated deep below ground, is accessible – the entrance is located in the lower part of Wenceslas Square. Wheelchair access is also available when traveling by tram (5, 8, 24, 26) or bus to Náměstí Republiky (the Náměstí Republiky metro station does not have an elevator).
