Overview of accessibility

Description of the building

The building of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University is located in an historical complex. It has four above-ground floors and one underground floor. The Institute of Clinical Dentistry and the Dean’s Office of the faculty are located here.

Entrance

The surface of the access pavement with a slight slope (up to 6%) is made of flat mosaic tiles. The main entrance to the building is not barrier-free (5 steps up). There is a single entrance door (width 95 cm) in the massive double-panel door that opens mechanically inwards. The doorbell (height 148 cm) is located on the right of the entrance under the staircase. Another staircase (9 steps up) leads from the entrance door to the reception area (desk height 94 cm) in the entrance hall.

The side entrance is accessible from Ke Karlovu Street. The surface of the access pavement with a slight slope (up to 7%) is made of mosaic tiles that change into coarser stone paving before entering the courtyard. At the entrance, there is a retractable parking column, which the reception controls remotely. A doorbell (height 141 cm) is available for communication.

In the courtyard with coarser mosaic tiles, there is a parking area and two lifts, and a wide double door (width 2x 95 cm) leads to the larger lift.

Interior

Lifts with doors on both sides connect the courtyard level and all floors of the building, except for the attic space (4th above-ground floor) where the administrative facilities are located. The attic floor is accessible only by stairs.

The reception area, dental clinic, other offices, and classrooms on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd above-ground floors are accessible from the central corridors, which are connected to the lifts.

The central corridors are separated by double doors with a slightly narrowed width of the main panel (width min. 76 cm). The doors of classrooms, offices, and other rooms are exceptionally single-panel (width min. 100 cm), but most are double-panel (main panel width 60 cm, side panel width 62 cm) with a threshold (height 2 cm). The manoeuvring space in the interior is sufficient.

The basement spaces are technical in nature.

The left wing of the building is connected by the central corridors at the level of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd above-ground floors to the adjacent building of the Dean’s Office of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University. The doors in the corridors could be locked. The building of the Dean’s Office of the faculty also has a separate non-barrier-free entrance (1 step up, 4 steps up) at Na Bojišti Street. The building with four floors has its own lift in the main staircase corridor with insufficient dimensions (automatically opening door width 90 cm, cabin width 170 cm, depth 80 cm), which connects the elevated ground floor to the 4th above-ground floor.

Lift

A lift with doors on both sides (automatically opening door width 100 cm, cabin width 160 cm, depth 200 cm) connects the 1st underground floor to the 3rd above-ground floor. The manoeuvring space in front of the lift is sufficient. The cabin with doors on the opposite side is equipped with a mirror, a pull-down seat, and a handle on the side wall. The controls at the entrances have a maximum height of 99 cm. The maximum height of the controls inside the cabin is 104 cm.

A smaller lift with doors on both sides (automatically opening door width 100 cm, cabin width 181 cm, depth 130 cm) also connects the 1st underground floor to the 3rd above-ground floor. The manoeuvring space in front of the lift is sufficient. The cabin with doors on the opposite side is equipped with a mirror and a pull-down seat on the side wall. The controls at the entrances have a maximum height of 100 cm. The maximum height of the controls inside the cabin is 103 cm.

Sanitary facilities

A separate accessible toilet (door width 80 cm, stall width 168 cm, depth 263 cm) is located on the 1st above-ground floor next to the lift. The single-panel toilet door is marked and opens mechanically outwards. Access to the toilet when looking from the entrance into the stall is on the left. The space for a wheelchair next to the toilet is sufficient (width 100 cm). The toilet is equipped with one pull-down and one fixed handle.

Parking

A reserved parking space is located at the intersection of Kateřinská Street and Ke Karlovu Street. The adjacent pedestrian crossing has lowered curbs on both sides.

Public transportation

The nearest public transportation stop is bus no. 291 (Kateřinská) located directly next to the building. There is a conveniently located barrier-free metro station C - I. P. Pavlova not far away from the building. For more information, see www.dpp.cz.
