Overview of accessibility

Description of the building

The historic building houses the dean’s office and the Geography and Geology Section of the Faculty of Science, Charles University, and in the basement, there is the Chlupáč Museum of Earth History.

Entrance

The surface of the access pavement is made of mosaic tiles with an elongated longitudinal slope (up to 6%). The main entrance to the building is not barrier-free (4 steps up). The double entrance door (main panel width 76 cm, secondary panel width 80 cm) opens mechanically towards the inside. The doorbell (height 160 cm) is located to the right of the door above the staircase. There is a vestibule after the door (width 181 cm, depth 130 cm) and another double swinging door (width 2x 78 cm) leading to the entrance hall. On the right is the reception area (counter height 100 cm), from which another staircase leads to the entrance hall (10 steps up).

A side entrance is available at the entryway to Votočkova Street 2038/4. The access pavement is uneven in places. In front of the entrance, there is coarse tiling with a transverse slope (up to 12%) and a concrete height-adjustment ramp (gradient 21%, length 20 cm). The entrance has a single-panel door (width 80 cm) in the entrance gate. It opens mechanically towards the inside. The doorbell (height 157 cm) is located in the right corner at the gate. After announcing a visit, the operator will allow access with a chip.

The entrance to the building is on the right at the end of the building passageway. At the entrance, there is one step up (height 13 cm, depth 22 cm) with a single straight ramp (gradient 15%, width 120 cm, length 100 cm) without a handrail and upper platform. The double door (main panel width 61 cm, secondary panel width 64 cm) opens mechanically towards the outside on the ramp.

Interior

From the side entrance, a corridor leads to the lift in the basement, which connects all floors except the lowered part of the entrance hall with the reception and the attic space (6th above-ground floor), where there is a computer room. The attic and the reception area are accessible only by stairs.

Non-barrier-free access also leads to the bistro and student clubs. Both rooms are located behind the main staircase in the upper part of the entrance hall on the elevated ground floor (2nd above-ground floor), from where another short staircase (5 steps up) on the sides of the hall leads to the peripheral central corridor with a connection to the lift.

The right (western) wing of the 5th above-ground floor (3rd floor) is also inaccessible, to which a short staircase (3 steps up) leads from the lift. In this part, mostly for administrative use, there are also other height-adjustment areas (3 steps down) behind the entrance to the individual rooms.

The offices and classrooms in the basement and on  the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th above-ground floors are accessible at the level of the central corridors, which are connected to the lift.

The central corridors are separated by a double swinging door with a narrower width for the main wing (min. width 60 cm). Both wings are usually open and secured. The doors of classrooms, study rooms, and other rooms are exceptionally single-panel (min. width 80 cm), but mostly double-panel (main panel width 60 cm to 65 cm, secondary panel width 62 cm to 67 cm) with a threshold (height max. 3 cm). The manoeuvring area in the interior is sufficient.

Access to the lower part of the large geology auditorium (VG) is through two double doors (width 2x 60 cm) in the rear (southern) wing of the building from the central corridor. The entrance to the upper part and to the VG gallery is from the stair landings of the main staircase (16 steps).

Lift

The lift (automatic door 105 cm wide; cabin 140 cm wide, 140 cm deep) connects the 1st underground floor to the 5th above-ground floor of the building. The cabin is equipped with a handrail on the front wall and a pull-down seat. There is no mirror in the lift. The controls at the entrance points are a maximum height of 121 cm. The maximum height of the controls inside the cabin is 122 cm.

Sanitary facilities

An accessible toilet (door width 90; stall width 239 cm, depth 161 cm) is located in the basement. It is accessible directly from the central corridor connected by the lift. The single-panel toilet door is labelled and opens mechanically towards the outside. The stall has a rotated layout of 90° (the toilet is anchored on the left side wall). Access to the toilet when looking from the entrance into the stall is on the right. The space for a wheelchair next to the toilet is sufficient (width 98 cm). The toilet is equipped with one pull-down handle and one fixed handle that is inadequate with respect to length.

Parking

Two reserved parking spaces are available at the intersection of Albertov and Studničkova Streets.

Public transportation

The closest public transportation stop is the barrier-free tram stop Albertov. Both boarding islands are located approximately 350 m from the building on almost level ground. The stop is served by tram lines 7, 14, 18, and 24. For more information, see www.dpp.cz.
