Overview of accessibility

Description of the facility

The extensive building complex with interconnected wings A-H serves as the teaching and administrative space of Charles University’s Faculty of Physical Education and Sport. Part of the premises is used by Charles University’s Faculty of Humanities. The building includes student accommodation facilities.

Entrance

Pedestrian access to the building from the nearest tram stops, Vozovna Vokovice and Nad Džbánem, is complicated. Both connecting roads from Evropská Street, where the stops are located, to José Martího Street slope (6-8%), the asphalt surface of the roads has occasional defects. Neither of the intersections with José Martí Street has crossings with a lowered curb. Similarly, there are no lowered curbs at the crossing over the road leading to the courtyard of the building complex where the access pavement cuts off.

The main entrance to the building, which is part of the H wing, is not accessible as there are 10 steps leading up to it; the double doors (main wing width: 87 cm, secondary wing width: 40 cm) open mechanically outwards. Behind the entrance there is another staircase consisting of 4 steps that leads to the reception (counter height: 106 and 75 cm) and then through the central hallway to the upper ground floor.

A locked secondary entrance is available approximately 30 m to the left of the main entrance. This is the entrance to the courtyard, in front of which there is a crossing without lowered curbs (curb height: 7-10 cm). The entrance gate consists of a single-leaf door (width: 90 cm) that opens mechanically outwards. A bell (at the height of 135 cm) is located to the right of the entrance gate.

In the passage to the courtyard, you will find the entrance to the E east wing. Behind the door with narrow wings (width: 2x 64 cm), which opens mechanically outwards, you will find a steep straight run ramp. The ramp has an inadequate lower landing (depth: 70 cm) and leads to the upper ground floor of the wing.

In the courtyard behind the passage there are two elevators facing each other, one belonging to wing E, the other belonging to wing H. The elevators ale level only in the courtyard (labeled as basement level); on the other floors the elevators are off level. The elevators provide the best access to wings H and E. Once in wing E access to wings D, A, B and C is possible.

Three additional separate entrances lead from the courtyard to the D south wing (main door wing width: 80 cm minimum). Two of the outer entrances lead to staircases with over 5 steps each. The ramps that lead up them have inadequate parameters (inclination: 17 %, width: 80 (!) cm, length: 420 cm), with no handrails or stops against rolling down. In addition, there is no direct connection between the entrance door wing and the ramps, and the lower landing has insufficient depth (110 cm).

None of the individual rear entrances to wings A, B and C, which connect further south to wing D, are accessible, with stairs leading up to them.

Building interior

The individual floors of the main wing H can be accessed by the elevator, with central hallways leading from the elevator to the classrooms and offices. Wing F, where the Congress Hall is located on the west side of the building complex, connects to wing H on the ground level only by a staircase consisting of 5 steps.

Wing E, adjacent on the east side, connects to wing H at the upper floors only via a staircase with about 13 steps. However, the elevators of both wings are level at the courtyard level (see Entrance), and it is possible to use the inclined platform lift (load capacity: 200 kg; transport area width: 80 cm, depth: 90 cm) on the second floor of wing H to move between the two wings. However, the platform only allows a somewhat difficult side access.

Wing E houses a refectory on the ground and doctors’ offices on the second floor.

The other parts of the building complex, wing D and wings A, B and C, which are connected to wing D and parallel to each other, are level with wing E and its elevator. However, passage between wings E and D on the ground floor is only possible when the refectory is open, and the fourth-floor passage is completely closed off.

The double doors dividing the wings and the central hallways have narrow wings (width: 2x 73 cm).

Wing C, which houses the teaching areas of the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Humanities on the ground and second floor, has its own service elevator.

Elevator

The elevator in wing H (automatic door width: 90 cm; cabin width: 140 cm, depth: 130 cm) connects all the floors between the basement and the fourth floor. The cabin is equipped with a handrail and a mirror. There is no folding seat in the cabin. The maximum height of the controls outside of the elevator is 118 cm, the maximum height of the controls inside the cabin is 125 cm. There is a slight height difference between the floor of the cabin and the floor of the adjacent corridor (about 2-3 cm).

The pass-through elevator of wing E (automatical door width: 80 cm; cabin width: 100 cm, depth: 123 cm) connects all the floors between the sub-basement to the fourth floor. The cabin is equipped with a folding seat, handrail, and mirror.

The self-service service elevator in wing E (mechanical outward opening door width: 2x 50 cm; cabin width: 102 cm, depth: 175 cm) connects all the floors between the sub-basement and the third floor. The cabin is not equipped with a handrail, mirror or folding seat. The controls outside of the elevator are at a maximum height of 110 cm; the maximum height of the controls inside the cabin is 135 cm.

Sanitation facilities

There are a total of five accessible toilets in wing H, with two more in wing B.

Three of the five stalls, located on the right-hand side of wing H on the first, third and fourth floor are in the same spot on every of the three floors and have the same parameters. The stalls (door width: 90 cm; stall width: 218 cm, depth: 171 cm) are individual units with access from the central hallway. The single-leaf doors to the restrooms are labeled and open mechanically outwards. The toilets in the stalls are anchored to the left-hand side walls. When facing the entrance to the stall, the toilet can be accessed from the left side in all three stalls. There is sufficient space for a wheelchair next to the toilet (width: 100 cm). The toilets on the third and fourth floor are equipped with two folding handles. The toilet on the first floor has only one fixed handle and a Euro key is necessary to unlock it.

Stall H003 on the first floor of wing H is part of the women’s restrooms (door width: 90 cm; restroom area width: 130 cm, depth: 170 cm). The stall (door width: 90 cm; stall width: 186 cm, depth: 153 cm) has a labeled single-leaf door that opens mechanically outwards. The toilet is anchored to the wall opposite the door and therefore does not allow for side entry. The sink is diagonally attached on the side wall. The toilet bowl is equipped with one fixed and one folding handle. The folding handle cannot be folded down.

Cabin H158 on the second floor of wing H is part of the men's restrooms. The stall (door width: 80; stall width: 191 cm, depth: 143 cm), also with an inadequate layout, has a labeled single-leaf door that opens mechanically outwards. Due to the toilet and the sink being anchored to the front wall opposite each other, access from the front is not possible. The toilet is not equipped with handles.

The mirrored shower stalls in wing B, which are part of the women’s/men’s changing rooms, also have an inadequate layout. The single-leaf doors (width: 80 cm) open inwards. The square-shaped stalls with a chamfered corner are not large enough (width: 81-189 cm, depth: 132-179 cm).

Parking

Two accessible parking spaces are available in the parking area in front of the main entrance.

Public transport

The nearest metro station, Nádraží Veleslavín (line A), is accessible. From there, trams 20 and 26 can take you to the stop Vozovna Vokovice (You can also take these trams from the city center). You will exit the tram onto a platform with a curb cut. Access to the building via the Do vozovny and José Martího streets is possible using the road as the sidewalks unfortunately do not have curb cuts. The route from the Nad Džbánem bus stop is similar, with the advantage that the road leading to the building isn’t tiled. For more information see www.dpp.cz.
