Sign language interpreting and Transcription services

Interpreting Services

Interpreting services are most often provided to students during classes and consultations with teachers, when dealing with study-related matters (e.g., at the study department), when communicating with Charles University staff, and in all other study-related situations.

Interpreting between English and International Sign System is provided only to a limited extent (depending on current staffing capacity).

Interpreting between languages other than English, Czech, International Sign System, and Czech Sign Language is not provided.

Who to contact

After agreement with the student and in cooperation with the teachers, the faculty contact person arranges interpreting services for individual students.

The contact person negotiates the details and scope of cooperation with the interpreter and subsequently monitors the fulfillment of the contractual terms.

For specific interpreting dates, interpreters arrange directly with students.

Students may also use the services of more than one interpreter during lectures.

Transcription Services

By transcription services we mean real-time transcription (simultaneous transcription).

This is a verbatim transcription of spoken language in real time, provided by professional, properly trained transcribers who type the speaker’s words on an electronic keyboard connected to a PC or laptop. The real-time transcription can be displayed:

  • on a regular PC or laptop monitor (if intended for one person),

  • on a larger screen (for a small group),

  • projected onto a big screen (for larger groups),

  • or via a polygraph system (regardless of the size of the audience).

Real-time transcription in English is provided only to a limited extent (depending on current staffing capacity).

Transcription in languages other than Czech and English is not provided.

Who to contact

After agreement with students and in cooperation with teachers, the faculty contact person arranges transcription services for individual students.

Transcribers are provided by the Paluba Centre (Faculty of Arts, CU), the Czech Union of the Deaf, or other organizations.
